Happy New Year!! Not been blogging and updating this space for sometime. My personal life got the better of me for the last 10 months. What better not than to upload photos I took during one of my trips to New Zealand last year.

Was taken to this steak house chain called Lone Star. This place give large servings a new meaning. Boy they are huge! I ordered the ribs and it came arranged standing .

normal serving steak seem to be able to feed 2 adults males after a week in the dessert. I can vouch that after dinner I could not eat anything else after finishing my ribs.
This place being a equivalent of a McD version of a steak chain sure seem to serve a giants servings with reasonable prices (relatively of course).

Coliseum Cafe and Hotel, K.L.

I heard so much about this place on it's food and history that when, in the rare occasion, I was in the city the other day I had to stop by and visit this place for lunch. This place was indeed old with a mixture of furnishing dating back to the colonial times with new ones put in as replacements. However for reasons only known to the proprietors it's not as well kept as one would hope for such a historic place. Maybe because its not been designated as a heritage site and it may not receive funding as such.
Back to the food. As such it must have been a very popular place before as it offered western and European cuisine to cater for the expats then. Offers like the sizzling steak must have been extremely popular back then.
As it was common now to get a steak almost anywhere in the country now, I suspect people whom patron this place must be a die hard fan or just out of curiosity like me whom had not been but want to know what the fuss is all about. I must say once in here it does gives you one nostalgic feeling and brings one back to times where it only a selected clientele can afford this place.
As for the food, honestly the atmosphere and history of the whole place overwhelms what I had ordered for my first visit.

Crab Party, Singapore.

Was in Singapore recently and was taken to this place near Upper Serangoon road. As it was a while since I had gone to Singapore, I had some adjusting to do with my surroundings especially at eateries that serves good food. Coming from where I live, a good place to eat need nor necessary have a clean environment. Well when I walked into this place, the first impression was "is the food good?". I have one approach to indicate if the food is good is the physical environment of the restaurant. More often than not a dirty place serves better food where I come from. Thus why my normal instinct fails me here.
Anyway back to the food order a crab with three different styles of noodles and some tofu. The fried udon was something new for me but the Contonese style kuey teow had be reminicing for more. The serving of kuey teow was small but it was tasty. Definately must try for me again.
The black peppered crab was especially ordered for my wife (she is a fan of crustaceans). The crab was shown to the customer before it was cooked and served here. Only had a small taste. No comments on this as I not a big fan of crabs.
So the conclusion here is that a clean restaurant does not necessary mean it does not serve good food.

Gurney Drive, Penang.

This pictures was taken when I made a weekend trip to Penang a few months ago. Was staying near at a place where they didn't have anything appealing to eat so decided to take a drive to the all famous Gurney Drive for some dinner.
True to the fact of it being popular, the place was packed with people mainly tourist. Coupled with the rain, it was difficult to get a place to sit. When we did, it was difficult to decide what to eat.So decide to order from stalls closes to where we were sitting.
There was this place that had a long queue for fried oysters. So i joined in the queue. The proprietor makes a batch of the fired oysters and sells them so the waiting time for each batch was about 5 minutes.
Then it started to rain, the queue did not relent. One of the customers (must be a tourist like me too) in the queue commented that "is it that good?"
Anyway got my plate and it wasn't cheap and the servings was also not too generous.
Then proceed to ordering the smoked squid next door.
All in all, the food was just above average but after travelling a long way and the reputation of the place one can't help but giving this place a try when you are in Penang even if its not that worth while.

Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa, Puchong.

Was around Puchong Jaya to pay some bills and I saw this place at the newly contructed office mall. I heard so much about Kampung Baru's Nasi Lemak but I never had the opportunity to try it. What better not than this place.
First impression was that there were not many people patronising it. Not a good sign. However when I went in, it turn out to be a self service style restaurant. I place my order and payment and took a seat. Numerous customers walk in and out immediately after thier meals. That why I did not see many customers at one time. The environment did not cater for lepaking...
As for the nasi lemak, there was various traditional fare and side orders available at reasonably inflated prices compared to the sidewalk stalls. Pretty tasty but I got no comparison as I never tried the original nasi lemak at Kampung Baru itself.
The rice was served at room temperture. I prefered that they had a choice of hot rice. Somehow hot steaming rice goes well with the sambal.

Tianjin Day 2, China.

Day 2, looking for dinner, decide to venture out towards the pedesdrian mall near the hotel. Boy!!! Everything seem to be big in China. its about the longest and widest pededrian mall I had seen. Anyway found this place at one of the off streets. Looked quite decent and most importantly they had a few places to sit outside, away from all the in door smoke.
I notice the table I sat on had this chinese chess set printed on it which was knee high. It was like something out from yester years even though it look almost new. I was wondering why the table was so low and it was almost like squat level. But I must admit it was fairly comfortable.
Anyway had a look at the menu, everything was in Chinese. I could read it but it had pictures. I ask what meat they had. Pork ribs and chicken steak came to mind. I decide to have the pork rib noodle. The noodle which I later found out was made from rice. It was the thickest rice noodles I had ever seen.
As usual the bowl of pork rib rice noodle came too much for one person. Seem to have all the food groups in it too, protien, carbohidrates, fibre and fat...I fairly manage what I can and I had to leave the rest. I must say it was good.
The thing about this large serving, I think seem to compensate for the fact that even if the food is just mediore, one then to forget about it due to its enormous size.
Unfortuantely it was my last night stay in China for this trip. Maybe next time when I go back I be having a feast.

Tianjin, China.

Had a trip to Tianjin, China last October. As this is my first trip to China and I didn't do any homework prior to me going in terms of looking for food. I hear a few things about the food in China but if you have not seen it it didn't mean much to me. I was expecting it to be very similar to Taiwan.
One noticeable difference is the huge potions of servings they give when you order. I had notice this when I walked into the restaurants in the afternoon for some halal food wih my collegues. Unfortuantely I didn't take any photos of the Xinjiang halal as we were so hungry after a long journey taking photos were the furthest thing from my mind. However I did manage to take a phot of the guys outside barbequeing the meat skewers.
For dinner, I was roaming around for some local food. I was looking around for a local place that had lots of customers. Saw this place behind the hotel Niiko that I was staying in. Walked in and knowing the portions I had to deal with, I told the waiter specifically that noodles for only one person and a bottle of beer. The noodles came enough for two people. It seems that if you serve a small portion, no one will come to the place anymore.
Few things I despice about eating in a local place here is that the allow indoor smoking. And the Chinese really are chain smokers. The restaurant was so full of smoke that when I came out I thought I just had a pack myself.
The other thing I found unappealing was that customers spit on the floor in the restaurant knowing other are having their dinner there. After a few of this incidences, I could finish my noodles and only had the beer and left the place.
Well not that I was not warned.

Mee goreng, Pulau Tikus Penang.

To whom who had gone to Penang knows that it is famous for its good food. I was recently enlighten by a Penagite that Penange is not known for its good food but to be more precise known for its good hawker food. It seems restaurant food in Penang in serve so so food only.

I guess this was only further reinforced when I was in Penang a few months ago. Had a drive to Penang so had the freedom to roam around to look around. Stumbled into Pulau Tikus one morning. It had a morning market and found this corner coffee shop with lots of people in it.
There was this stall that had a sign with says "Jones Road Famous Mee Goreng". When you see a sign like that well you got to try it. Ordered a plate and of course Char Kuey Teow also. .
I must say both tasted good but I like the Mee Goreng better. But somehow the mee goreng gave me the feeling of not eating it after half a plate. I can't describe it in English. It tasted good but this feeling just comes to me after that.
Well after this short trip to Penang, I guess Penang hawker food is still the best.

Restoran Kim Hoe, Pulau Ketam.

Happy New Year 2010!!!! Boy! How time flies... I not been blogging for 11 months now. What suppose to be a short break turned out to be multiple short breaks which accumulated to almost a year. The good news is that this is one of my New Years resolution to continue with this blog. The other thing is that I had been taking frequent photos of the places I had been for my gastronomic appetite.
A few week during the year end school holidays, I took a weekend trip to Pulau Ketam for a look around. The boat trip takes about half and hour depending if you on the fast or slow boat.
This place came to sight as it was one of the first few eating place on the main street. A typical looking chinese restaurant, it ws packed with people during lunch. Ordered seafood and there was a fried oyster stall next door to this place. Ordered two large plates of fried oyster cakes, some crabs, vegetables, prawn and soup. It tasted reasonable but I found the trip and surrounding of the Island more memorable than the lunch I had.
Would I return... maybe but maybe on a bigger occasion and in another restaurant. However eating on shops and house built on stilts over the mangrove swamp on an island off the mainland is an experience where on should try at least once in a life time.

Chang Kei, Salak Town.

Not been blogging latestly. Was so tied up with work and other personal thing that I didn't have the mood to get into the site. Had this archive of photos I had taken and I think today is time for me retrieve them and post them. I walked past this place many times but not somehow gone in to eat here. So decided to go in one day for lunch. Order some noodles. Hokkien mee, stir fried "low shee fun" and venison "wat tan ho". The portions were large and had especially the "wat tan ho" had lots of meat in it. As for the taste, it was ok. Not too bad and not too overpowering. I definately return to this place.

Garden Palace Seafood, SS2 PJ.

Sao Kong lunch is traditionally organised by the office just weeks before CNY and this is no exception. As we normally have it at around Kampung Subang area but the last two Sao Kong makan was held at this place at SS2. A 8 course lunch was organised. I don't remember much about the lunch I had at this place previously but judging from the current taste of food this year, I don't rate this place very highly. Except for the low sang thing, the rest of the fare tasted pretty moderate to me. One thing new I seen was that them serving two promfret dish together. This is maybe because of its small size. Could also be anything bigger that what was given was all sold out in the market. Good company and tradition prevailed over the served food that afternoon. Anyway Happy Chinese New Year!!!!!

Loong Foo, Salak Town.

I was thinking what better place to start a new year's blog with a place that i have my usual meals almost every lunch time since I started working in Sepang. It one of the place which had shown some consistency in the quality of food being cooked all this while and I mean I had been eating here almost every weekday for the past 8 years. This time I ordered the salted egg with mantis prawns and it was fantastic. Some one made a comment that the mantis prawns was good to go with some beers. I can't agree more. I came to this place just a few days before Christmas to indulge ourselves and we were not dissapointed as usual.

Mobile Lok Lok, Puchong Opposite IOI.

When it comes to Lok Lok (steam boat) Fatman always comes to mind nowadays. There must be this industrialist whom thought what happened to all this lok lok that was around in the 70's. I remember seeing this stalls in front of cinemas and before the movie starts, my dad will take me to this lok lok stalls and 'makan'. As the lok lok comes in skewers, it doesn't fill up a person unless he/she eats l0ts of it. Hence it was a light meal. However in the 80's and 90's I don't remenber seeing any stalls selling lok lok anymore. It was a dying business.
This person must have come up with the idea to revive it at the turn of the century. Well I rememner only Fatman was the one I can see frequently around a few years back. I have to give it to the person whom thought of reviving an old product and giving it a new outlook. With hawkers not being allowed to peddle their fare at any permanent location next the the streets by the local councils, mobility is the key now. Hence you see many hawkers use mini lorries to speddle their trade.
There is this place at Puchong, opposite IOI mall that have a large number of lok lok stalls set up every night. Initially it started with only one vehicle and slowly many more decided to stop there to peddle their trade. Now I counted almost 10 stalled there inlcuding a someone selling bubble tea. Judging from the crowd they draw everynight business must be good. I frequent this place often during late at night when you feel you need something light to eat. When ever I go I always wonder how long these traders will get to sell at this place. It is located next this hugh contruction site which is almost completed. I guess its going to be a office mall of some sort. I am thinking that once this place is completed these hawkers will not be allowed to sell there anymore.

Nyonya Mee goreng, Bandar Puteri Puchong.

One of the better place to have Nyonya Mee goreng was in Subang Jaya SS15. I not found a place that could actually rival it until now. Well almost. I only tried this stall in Puteri Mart because I saw many people buying from it. So if many people eat must be good. So decide to give it a try. It was not too spicy or soggy or dry. Just the right balance as how I like it. Although its not something that I drive miles and miles for me to eat it but I sure have it again.

The Cendol Man, USJ 20.

There is this cendol man stationed at USJ20 next to the field. What s intersting about this mobile stall is that it has a stove and cooks mee goreng. Not the best cendol or rojak around but he makes it up by serving fast. I not tried the mee goreng before but judging from the customers he has it must be of some reasonable standard. Will blog about it when I tried it next time.

Mak Jah, Bukit Jelutong Shah Alam.

I was given a treat at this place by one of my boss. I heard about this place very often over the blogs. However since I was not that hungry, I only ordered the ox tail soup with rice. Surprisingly this simple soup goes very well with rice. The spices were not too overpowering or to spicy for my liking. Its definately well balanced. Also had some scramble eggs to go with.
I didn't get the opportunity to try the rest but I will return to try the rest. Till later........

I haven't been posting often lately. Sort of gotten fed up with all the eateries around my place. Gone are the places where you can get good food nowadays. I guess capitalism had creep into the art of serving good food nowadays. Capitalism in the form of marketing. Marketing the environment and ambience of the restaurant to be exact whilst serving mediore food at small portions. Haven't anyone noticed lately that most of the chinese food that come from humble beginings had been turned into a multi ringgit making enterprise? There is no more honor in serving good food just make your place look good and the rest will follow. Has the Malaysian Boleh spirit creep in to this industry as well? Never mind the surroundings if its next to the drain...I want my original char kuey teow done by the road side!!! At least it taste better.

Was at this place for dinner. Looked like they had a fare number of customers judging from the crowd. Anyway it was a typical "upgrade" form of chinese traditional servings that had gone thru a cosmetic change. Even the waitress there 'pushed' us to order more as the portions were small she admitted. The price we had to pay for the proprieter's expensive rental? Ah well, I seriously considering boycotting all these 'upgrade' and 'upclassed' mamak, kopitiams and traditional restaurants if these were to continue.

We actually wanted to go to this place for the much talked about Japanese buffet. We made a mistake for not calling ahead and booking for a table. When we arrived the place so packed with customers. The floor space of this place was not that big but it was cleverly arranged to maximise the space. Until I walked into the place I didn't know that on the ground floor is actually a Japanese fast food joint and the buffet is upstairs.
Since no space for buffet, had to eat the fast food downstairs. As I not too familiar with names of Japanese food, I can only remember bento and rice burgers. It was a bit pricey for a fastfoods but then again Japanese food is never cheap in KL. The fastfood was kind of avaerage. Nothing to shout about. Except for the meat it pretty much tasteless. I don't think I recommend it to anyone. But next time I be back, with reservations of course, for the buffet.

Ampang Yong Tau Foo, USJ.

When I was a kid, I remember that my parents use to take me to Ampang for Yong Tau Foo. Bearin mind in the 70s the journey from PJ to Ampang was not short trip like now. Situated north of KL and with small truck roads, a journey there can sometime take up to an hour. Back then I use to remember having yong tau foo in a small flimsy looking shack. As for the food well if you are so far away and you make an effort to go there, it must be good right?
Coming back to the present, I think this franchising (or some other form of it) thing had gone a bit too far as far as traditional food is concern. I guess everyone is jumping into the band wagon to make money (eg. like the sudden mushrooming of Kopitiam in recent years). Well without central control over the quality and taste of the food, one shouldn't expect too much from these branches that serve "fastfood" now. The mass production of yong tau foo and generic taste of it had made this Ampang yong tau foo had degraded the very point of traditional fares such as these, not to mention that the yong tau foo taste the same from one branch to another.
Another point to ponder is the lost of the finer touches that the original proprieter had which he directly knew the feedback from the customers. I guess like everything else in this country, it will mushroom initially and when reality bites over time only the strong will survive.

O'Viet Vietnamnese, Sunway Pyramid.

Vietnamese food is something that I seldom have. Not because I don't enjoy it but just that its not so readily available everywhere and it found mostly in the malls. Somehow I seem to like many of the servings as they seem to taste pretty healthy to me. I guess its what you order. O'Viet is loacted at one of the floors at the Pyramid skating ring. Was browing thru the menu and the only few things that look familiar to me. The Vietnamese style coffee and the Summer/paper rolls were among them. Also ordered the vegetable with seafood noodle and the combo platter.
The coffee was a dissapointment. I remember that at previous places the coffee done this way is comes very thick. I guess this place is not so generous on the coffee powder.
The combo platter comes with fried lamb, chicken and prawns sprinkled with fried peanuts. I especially enjoyed the taste of fired chicken with the peanuts. The summer rolls were ok. Nice and plain without any bad after taste.
The seafood noodles was definately the highlight. As there was only two of us, I didn't order many things and the food here also don't come in large portions. The combo which they is meant for 2-3 people is actually mean for 1 person (maybe only me).
Dinner at this place turned out to be average. Nothing really much to look forward for a next visit. I guess I may not be coming back.....

Bak kut teh, Bukit Raja Klang.

In Klang, there is two wonders of the world, the seafood and Bak Kut Teh (and necessarily in that order). If the BKT in Klang is not good they will not stay in business for long. One of the theory that they teach in management school is to enhance your core competencies so that you can deliver an excellent product to your customers. What better example is that the BKT in Klang. All BKT shops in Klang only sells BKT or the latest variation of it the dry BKT nothing else. They are so good in selling just one product that they had improvised and improved on it multifold over that not other place in the Klang Valley can duplicate their core competency. Whilst only selling one core product, the BKT business can control cost in storage and have economics of scale in buying raw products from their supplier. With less cost, profits margin increases if they can sell the same quantity as before. Its big business selling BKT and no wonder almost everyone is opening it everywhere else in the Klang Valley.
As for me to have the best BKT, I will always head towards the course if it.... Klang of course.

Ah Lim Seafood Restaurant, Kota Kemuning.

Kota Kemuning seem to be an isolated housing project between Klang and KL so I alway seem to think that its not a place to have good food. Was some how coaxed into going to have dinner there the other day. My friend recommended this place as it was the only chinese 'tai chow' still operating in the area. As entered this place, there this lady taking our order whom looked very familiar but I can't seem to put her face on where I seen her. Anyway proceeded in ordering dinner. Had the soya sauce prawns (big ones too), salted egg crab, claypot tauhu, patin steam fish and some vegetables. I must say the food was good which was not that surprising to me as the shop was almost full of customers. Initially I thought it was the only chinese place in Kota Kemuning but it was not. The food was good.
After half way thru dinner I remembered this where I had seen the lady, this lady use to operated at USJ16 from a corner coffee shop a "tai chow" stall. As I remembered it, there food was very good. I always wondered where they moved to because the last time I was in USJ16 to look to this place they had moved.
As we finished the meal, my other friends were still hungry. So we ordered the Hookien Meehoon and salted mantis prawns. I thought that the soya sauce large prawn and the salted mantis prawns were the highlight of the dinner. I definately recommend this two things to anyone going to this place.
Well I was lucky to bump into them again. Maybe this is a start of my many visits there.

Restoran EPL, Sunway.

Duringone of my meet ups with some friends, the discussion ws on where we would have lunch. I was told that there was this coffee shop in Sunway that served decent pork noodles. So made our way there. The place was named Restaran EPL. Don't know why but maybe the propriater is an ardent English football fan. We ordered two version of it, one with egg and the other without, with everything in it. Well what can I say, with pork the secret of any good tasting meal lies in its lard. They had enough fried lard in it too make it taste good. It tasted damn good with all that lard. I have to get my cholesterol checked soon.

Lan Je Talapia Fish, Rawang.

Made a trip back to the in-laws places over the weekend. There was this place that in Rawang that sells only steam Talapia fish as its main product and they only serve it steamed. This place so pack with customers over dinner that you think they must serve so fantastic food over there. The size of the talapia fish is just about the size of the adult palm. As I understand this fish is a very cheap fish. I use to buy 3 Talapia for about RM5 when I was running a eatery in Tanjong Malim. But this place is prcing it at RM13 per fish. I can imagine thier profit margin.
Back to the food, talapia is a fresh water fish. If not cooked properly you taste the "muddy" taste of the fish when eat it. This place steam this fish well with enough ginger and chilly that it there non of this taste in the fish. I must admit that the steamed talapia they serve is quite tasty (no wonder there lots of people!). The fish meat is not only fresh but the secret lies in the gravy the fish is served in. Not too salty and the ginger not too overpowering.
They have many other dishes you can order but they specialing in only the steam talapia and imagine with that alone it can attract so many customers everyday in a small town to this place.

New Paris SS2, PJ.

I have not been to this place for ages since I had moved away from Damansara. As I was invited for dinner at this place, I jumped at the opportunity. From my previous memory this placed served pretty decent foos at affordable prices. The speed of your order comes also seem to be very fast even when the place is packed. I don't know how they do it. This place seems to be alsways packed even during weekdays.
When I arrived there, the food was already ordered. They had some dishes that I can remember like champagne chicken. The rest well my first time having. I especially liked the deep fried pork trotters. It had very little oil in it, all drained out I guess after frying. Another one that I especially like was the yam "fut putt" with mantis prawns. This is new to me. All this while I normally have yam with assorted nuts, vegetable and chicken in it. It was nicely done with the mantis prawns.
This place is sure awesome and consistant with its food after so many years.

Bazaar Ramadan SS18, Subang Jaya.

During the month of Ramadan, I always wanted to go to a Ramadan Bazaar other than the one I usual one I visit in USJ 4. I managed to make it a point to go to the one in SS18 which was highly recommended by my office collegues. The variety of stalls and uniqueness of cooking can be seen here. I had some shots of the amazing stalls I seen which I thought was pretty popular judging from the crowd around it.

Tai Ka Lok, Ipoh.

I was looking for some breakfast in the morning. Stumbed onto this place behind the hotel I was staying in. The street seems to be a food haven. I saw many shops there but they were closed in the morning so I think they must open at night. There were a few that were open in the morning. This street is facing the ExcelsiorHotel at Jalan Seenivasagam. As I am not familiar with Ipoh food location, I decided to observe the shop. It turned out to have a steady stream of customers, it was not packed but people keep coming and going. I thought this must be reasonable.
It turned out to sell soup or "kon low" "kuey teow" with some stuffed "yong tau foo" that goes with it. As Ipoh is famous for its Kuey teow noodles, before eating I have no doubt that it will be good with its "nga choy". Indeed the noodles was good as it partically melts in your mouth. The sides dishes was also good. One thing about this type of noodles and side offering that it doesn't leave you guilty of eating too much fat and your mouth does not have a greasy feeling after taste. The content of the sides dishes may not reflect so but it does taste like healthy food. Two thumbs up for this.

East Ocean Restaurant, Menglembu Ipoh.

Had a trip to Ipoh last weekend for a wedding. Stopped by Menglembu for some lunch. I not been back to Ipoh for three years now and in fact even longer for Menglembu. I was surprise that Menglembu had lost most of its charm. New building had been erected in place of old ones. For this matter Ipoh city also had lost its charm. I use to enjoy going thru the old colonial building in town centre but last week, unsightly new buildings puncture the scenery of the city in patching lending an eye sore to the city. Anyway back to the food. We stop here for some lunch. Order some common and simple dishes. The house favourite is the salted steamed chicken. That was really good. I ordered also some vegetable that I not had eaten before. They say its planted in Cameron Highlands. I tasted a bit like spring onions but I was unable to determine what it was let along translate it into English. The cantonese fired noodles was also my other favourite. The total bill only came to slightly under RM50. I thought that was cheap with such high quality food.

I was told that this place serves good seafood at reasonable prices. As I passed this place to attend a wedding last week, I decide to give it a try the other day. As there were three of us I couldn't order many things so we decided to try something new. What was recommended for us was the herbal soup with "Kampung Chicken" (free range chicken in English I guess), young onion sprout cooked with pork and the asam fish. Other than that had the "kum heong" crab for the wife. I presonably liked the asam fish. As the fish was fried it was very crispy but the gravy was too concentrated and sour so you have to take it with rice to enhance this dish. I remembered someone telling me sometime ago that if restaurants fry fish it means that it is not fresh fish. The frying helps mask the refridgeratored taste. Well this one didn't taste all that bad. My other recommendation is the herbal soup chicken. It definately tasted good at night.

The price was quite reasonable. All this for only RM96 for food only. I would definately make a visit to this place again.

As it is the rainy season now, sometimes I am craving for something that can warm me up (besides alcohol and women) during these times. During lunch last week, made a trip to Bandar Baru Nilai for some Bak kut Teh as I not had it for sometime. BBN does not really have food to shout about, the same goes with this BKT. Had the supposingly dry BKT. After having it, I came to the conclusion that if one should not just jump into the band wagon to sell something that they are not good at. As far as I can remember they had not sold dry BKT before, it tasted more like condenced BKT of the soupy kind. It was not all that bad but not great either. Next time at this place I shall stick to the soupy version.

Was deciding to have seafood with a friend who is back in K.L. for a holiday. As he was deprived of 'Good' seafood as he worked in Dubai, he wanted some place reputable. I had not been to this place for years after I had moved to my present house. I remembered that the last time I was there they actually had a pond where you can fish in it. This place is next to the NKVE highway so you can see the traffic drive by while you fish. Well over time with development and all the pond had to go and the place now is smaller.
As for the food, the last time I was there I remembered that it was pretty good but I can't remember anything that stuck to my memory. So this time just ordered some asam prawns, crabs, fish, herbal soup frog legs and bean curd. The highlight for me is definately the herbal soup frog legs. The soup's taste was not too overpowered by herbs and you can still taste the frog legs. I suspect they also included some rice wine into it to cook. The next dish that come to mind would be the fish. I not a big fan of fish but the groupa cooked in ginger had the right balance of ginger and fish. As for the crabs well it was just average. I would go again to this place for the frog legs again.

I have not really tasted Algerian food before except for the usual budget kebab shop here and there. During this trip to Toulouse, I had the opportunity to sample some Algerian food abait with some healthy portions that one could not finish. I learnt words like Tajime and Kus-Kus that goes with the beef, chicken or lamb. As this my first time having Algerian, the dishes were totally new to me and I end up only looking for meat.
I ordered the kebab lamb combo with rice. One thing noticed about European meat is that it taste better than the once I get back home. I however did notice that the cooked meat at this place do taste very similar to kebabs. I did have a nice pleasant experience about this place.

Haven't been blogging recently as I had to return to Toulouse end of last month for an assignment for a couple of weeks.This is the archived collection of some photos I had taken during this trip. I did managed to make a weekend trip to the Gouffre of Padaric and had lunch at this place. It was just infront of the cave entrance. I suppose that the grills was thier speciality. Had the hash beef steak, it was basically beef patees. Was a bit bland, I am sure that Ramle begger patees tasted better. However since it was place meant for tourist, I shouldn't be complaining much.

Not been blogging lately. Partially been busy and also partially not been going to a new place for dinner. Was at this place with my cousin at the Curve. A Hakka Restaurant. Being a Hakka myself was not too keen on outside Hakka food myself because you then to get better home cooked food. Never the less I wanted to try. What we ordered was normal dishes that I had eaten since young and it wasn't very exciting for me. Since there was not much novelty and interest in the food, what interest me was the prices. Small portions of Hakka dishes that I would normally not expect. Some how I felt that it was too expensive for a simple dish. FYI, Hakka dishes are simple and easy to cook. Anyway other than that I still prefer my mum's and aunt's cooking.

Had a much awaited family reunion dinner here. I not been to Jaya 33 before but this place looked nice from outside. On the night we were there they even had a wedding dinner going on. But this time I had lots more to eat. The Buddha Jump Over the Wall (BJOW)was much talked about for th enight. As this is only my second time having it, I didn't have much put much thought into it. I didn't fancy it the first time i had it. I remembered that it left a bad fishy after taste in mouth. As for this place, the BJOW didn't have the bad after taste but it tasted like herbal soup. I must admit, I do not know how to appreciate it.
The next dish that I want to talk about was the roast suckling piglet. This I can appreciate. The sinful fat and all. After the skin was eaten up by all of us they even bucthered the carcass and fired it one more time.
To be honest there nothing spectacular about the food here. It tasted just like the chinese restaurant in any hotel. I still prefer food in the not so clean restaurants that attract many people in obscure places or maybe I not the polish person that enjoys ordinary food at high prices.

I haven't had much time going around to new eating places this month hence not much blogging also. Been busy running around with family visiting and all. We had a family dinner at this place sometime last week. It was just behind USJ 1 Jati 1 Apartments next to the light industrial factories. It was my first time here. As I had ISabel in my arms sleeping, I didn't manage to get any photos myself and didn't really taste most of the fare that was ordered. However, the highlight of the night was definately the deep fried pork knuckle and the curry fish. The pork knuckle was tasty but a bit too salty. The fish curry was nice and thick.
As the night was over, my sister complained that she had to drink lots of water. I guess it was the MSG in the food. I didn't get this thirsty feeling but then again I only ate the curry and the pork knuckle. On normal circumstances I would give a thumbs down for the food (due to the MSG) but I give them the benefit of doubt as I had not 100% appreciated their food.

No trip to France is complete without a visit to its vinyard for some wine tasting. This is exactly what I did. There this Chateau near Tuolouse that is owned by this family for generations. You can go for some wine tasting and drink all you want for only 3 Euro. They serve a wide selectionsof wine from their vinyard and open the bottles in order of wine taste to enhance the flavour so that one wine does not over power another. They go from mild dry to the full bodied sweet. I ended buying two bottles from this place of both extremes as my taste buds only can taste the first glass and the last glass of wine.

On our last night at Toulouse, we were hunting around the city centre for a good restaurant for dinner. We actually found a place that serves good beef steaks which cost 50 Euro for a 5 kilo piece of meat. They were full so we had to go elesewhere. We also wanted to try our other favourite place D'Entrecote but it was close till July. So I guess we have to make another try to Toulouse just to try the beef again. Then we decided to go to the Capitole for dinner, as we were walking there we notice there lots of people going there, infact thousands. When we reached there we found out the Maroon was having a free concert at the Capitole.
So back tracked to and we ended up at Place Wilson. As I had not eaten actual Fioe Gra before, we chose this place to have dinner. They have Foie Gra as a 'eu plate' (main course in French). All this while we were having pate foie gra as an entree so this is a must try.
Well the wife ordered the set dinner as I only ordered the Foie Gra 'eu plate'. We also ordered the cassoulet.
What was surprising was that the entree came with a bowl of salad with pork patee. It was quite a big serving and we were wondering how are we going to finish our mains. The Foie Gra tasted totally different from the patee version that we had before. Imagine eating duck liver that is full of fat. It tasted like eating duck fat. They cooked it with lots of garlic as I am suspecting that it may smell without it. My wife didn't like it at all. Well I told her that it was the real deal of the speciality in France. The Foie Gra mains alone cost 25 Euro.
As for the rest of dinner, it was definately a fat over load as the pork patee had large amount of fate in it. The cassoulet had pork stomach or intestines with pork skin and of course the foie gra.
What a dinner to end a 5 weeks stay in Toulouse. Fat overload!!!

I had eaten at this place on my last trip to toulouse. They serve good kebab, Turkish style even though the place are owned by Algerians. I personally like the sheesh kebabs. I was told that sheesh kebabs are skewed meat barbequed over a fire and the Turkish are famous for this. The kebabs comes with a generous helping of salad and Arabic bread. After many weeks in France the Arabic bread was a pleasant surprise. Unlike the hard bauguet, this bread was actually soft. I ordered the lamb (agneau in French) kebab and the misses had the beef (bouef in French). Both meat was tender and soft. I really enjoyed this Kebabs. It was not too rare. I shall make a point to go here again if I have another chance of a trip to Toulouse.

Here comes the weekend and we ventured out for some good French restaurants. We were unable to decide on one place as we were walking around the centre of town for a long time. So hunger got into the way and we decide on this place. As we entered we were surprise to see many customers having shell fish with chips. We were so amazed by it that we decided to order it. We found out thru the menu that it was called moules (or muscles in English). We ordered the entree. They had a choice of bloc de foie gra de canard (roughly translated into fatty duck liver pate) and the salmon. Ordered one of each. The foie gra pate was good. It taste better with some toast.
For info, South of France is famous of Foie Gra with is duck liver. The duck liver is big but as this was pate you don't see the liver as such. They actually force feed the duck until the liver get big enough to be eaten whole. Actual fioe gra is very expensive but during this meal we had the cheaper version.
The moules were ok. I m not much of a fan of shell fish but I try anything the first time. It was a good dinner as we had something that we don't usually have at home.

We were at this Sunday morning market at around St. Aubin. The market is situated around the church. It was pretty intersting and took some shoots of the produced sold there. There were life poultry sold there and there were some of the biggest chickens I had seen in my live. They could be free range chicken. The best thing to buy there was the roast. As I had tried the roast chicken and pork the last time, I decided to buy a leg of roast pork trottes this time. For some reason the skin of the pork is black in colour when roasted unlike the onces we get back in K.L. were it turns orangy red. The skin was crispy with the fat and oil melting in your mouth when biting it. Sinful meat....

One of the weekends took a day trip to a town nearby Toulouse called Albi. It similar to Carcasonne but only a smaller version. We had lunch at this place at the city centre beside the Cathedral in Albi. As usual since the speciality in South France was Duck, ordered the duck for myself and the wife order pork. I tasted a bit of the pork, it was just ordinary but the duck was good. I never had so much duck in this short duration as compared to my whole live. The duck leg was juicy and tender. I wonder how long to they need to cook it to get it this way as duck meat is pretty tough. Anyway I didn't want to be bored by technicalities, just to enjoy my duck.

I always walked pass this place on the way to town. I called it the blue restaurant as it is painted blue on the outside and has lightings after dark that make it look blue. It has a display of seafood outside. I gave it a try last night. Went with a group of friends. As my wife has a weakness for seafood I had to order the Grand Blue (seafood plate) for two and a large crab, three main course and a rose wine. The seafood plate was huge. One thing about the seafood plate was that its served cold, not like what I am use to with all the variety of cooking that can be found in K.L.. The plate had a crab, oysters, mussels, snails and prawns. At the end of it I must say it was good.
The starters we had calamari with ink sauce. It tasted a bit spicy but I am not a big fan of the ink sauce. For the mains we all ordered the samething, the duck (canard in French). The duck was tender and the skin was crispy. Some how with my eating experience here in Toulouse, the poutry skin is always crispy when cooked.
The highlights of the night for me is the chocolate cake with ice cream on it. The chocolate cake was just nice, not too rice or not too dry. The cake had a soft centre and a serving of ice cream on top of it. I normally don't take desserts but I made an exception in this case. The total bill came to 166 Euros for 5 adults.

Medieval City of Carcassonne.

Made a trip to the medieval city of Carcassonne. It about an hour by trian from Toulouse. Before we left for Carcassonne, our training instructor recommended that we have the cassoulet. With that in mind, when wew arrived at the city, it was the first agenda for the day, have lunch. We wondered into the city which was a castle rebuilt from a Roman ruined castle in the 13th century. Having lunch inside a medieval castle, thats a first for me. After looking around, we settled for this place as it was the only place that had seatings during lunch time.

Of course I had to try the local fare. Order the Occitane menu which was a set lunch menu for 20 euro each. Chose the fioe gra (fatten duck liver) salad and of course the cassoulet. Till now I did not know what was suppose to be inside the cassoulet. As this is my second time having fioe gra , the first time was my last trip to Toulouse 3 years back, can't remember much about the taste, I found it very intersting in a good way.

The cassoulet turned out to be baked beans (not in tomato sauce like in Malaysia) with a huge pork sausage and roasted duck thigh. Some of my colleugues could finish it as maybe the dish was too rich in meat but I finish it till the last bean and liked it. I definately would eat this cassoulet again before I go.

To wash the fioe gra and cassoulet down, I had the local draft beer 1664. I had noticed that beer in France is much more expensive that the other places in Europe. Maybe its because that they produce wine more. The lunch can with apple pie with ice cream, I was so full that I could eat any more. Gave away my apple pie to my wife for her taste buds enjoyment.

Where ever you go they say, one of the most standard things you can get about food in the world is McDonald's. I had my first McDonald's since my 5 weeks stint in Toulouse last weekend. Of course I had to try the menu that is unique which cannot be found in K.L. i.e. Pork. Had the Royal Bacon and for beef the Le M. With my two weeks experience here, I found that pork is very tasty here and of course in the supermarkets the cheapest meat around. As for bacon, well nothing further can be said about it when its deep fried and eaten crispy.

Last Thursday ,I had a rare chance of getting some free time during the weekdays to roam the town too look for some decent food. This place was told to me that it was highlightly recommended in the Tourist brochure. It seems it only serves one main menu that is beef but it will be cooked differently everday. That will be easy to order I thought. No problems of my wife saying "anything will do". We were there at about 7pm they had few customers, initially impression was that they had lots of staff for few customers. As the night went on, I realise that they had a queue infront of the restaurant. I must be good.
The waiteress came and told us the only order we can do is that, How do we want of beef? Rare, medium or well done. We wanted medium and well done. We ordered a bottle of wine and an espiritif called 'Khir' (I think). The wine was a house pouring one. It went well with the meat.
The mains came with fries. The first plate came with only a few slices of meat with lots of fries, its a rip off my initial thoughts but a few moments later a main serving plate of the well done and meduim beef came. It was soaked in oil, ie. olive oil. My first bite, it tasted very good, a bit spicy and the beef was very tender. It reminded me of the beef rendang minus the spicyness. No wonder this place had a queue. Cleaned my plate.
I thought it was reasonable too. The meal came out to 100 Euros for 5 persons, which works out to be 20 Euros each. This includes dessert. I don't think you can get meat with these prices in K.L. We left the place thinkning of returing before we leave for home next month.

When I was wondering around the morning market, I noticed two stall selling roast chicken, pork and some unidentifiable animal. I was unable to identify what animal it was. It initially looked like a cat but I more or less guess it was a rabbit but the sign doesn't mention it was rabbit. I am still wondering what it was. Anyway I bought half a roast pork for 6 Euro. Boy!! It was tasty on the outer roast skin. The chicken was a bit more expensive. I shall find out what is this animal that they roasted on the skewer...

Been to Toulouse now for a week and I had not have the chance to update my blog. Spent the whole week getting use to the surroundings. The journey was a bit too much for my daughter and she took a few days recovering from the jet lag. It was raining and gloomy the first few days that we were here but lucky the sun came out over the weekend. Went to a weekend market to buy some groceries. I took some scenes from the market. This market was one of many in Toulouse on Sunday. Fruits and vegetables here were cheaper than in the supermarkets. I will further update on my stay in Toulouse soon.

This place is located in the industrial area of USJ 1. Inever knew this place existed until my cousin took me there last week end. This place is actually located inside an industrial area that had a dead end road and I am surprise that this place was jammed packed on a Sunday evening. I wonder how people got to fine this place? The food must be good!! As I was passing the other industrial lots, I see other businessmen opeing other restaurants around the area cashing in on the market. The restaurant is located in an industrial lot.
As for the food, the fish head curry was the best I had tasted. In fact whatever we order was good but the curry fish head leaves me with lasting memories. Not only for the taste but for the just nice proportions of ingredience inside it. This place definate gets my vote.

This place is actually located in Miu Zhe Tsui ( I think) i.e. known as Chinatown in Singapore, at Crimson's at Ara Damansara. I wonder why they called it this as MTZ as this place is neither historical or significant only some developer who wanted to make some money out of the venture. My disagreement for the name of the place a side, this donut place will be the first place you see when you enter the main entrance. I not a big fan of Donuts but I stopped by for a coffee after a good dinner. As it was after 9 pm and we just ordered only coffee, we had additional donuts served to us which I believe were not the onces that they sell thru out the day. As I am not a big fan of donuts and this MTZ, I believe I will not walk into this place again unless devine intervention takes place.

I never knew that La La Chong had a restaurant at Ara Damansara until a fews weeks ago when I had to meet someone here. I alway thought that they were opposite terminal 3 Subang. So when over when my brother was around over the weekend. I never had good impressions for the one at Terminal 3 but this place was a surprise. Maybe because the chefs are different. Ordered the commonly known palates. The surprising favourite for me was the hot plate bean curd which I must say was very tasty. The steam la la too was fantastic. My family and I totally enjoyed it. I am sure my next visit will be in the coming weeks.

There is this food court opposite Tesco Puchong that I use to go often but I had not been there since the past year. Thought I dropped by with the family for some dinner the other night. As there are few good places to have lunch around KLIA it is of wonder that even a mediore place can be packed with customers during lunch time here. Charterfield was a former site office for the contractors when they were constructing KLIA. Now it turn into a place where people go for reasonably priced lunch away from the prices of the KLIA terminal. One place I often frequent is the curry mee stall there. They also serve wan ton mee but I prefer the curry. One word of caution is that when ever anyone orders "siew yoke" on got to specify that they want lean meat. Even then you end up with fatty portions. This place somehow loves to sell fatty pork. It is frequented by KLIA taxi drivers and worker. Then it must be convinient and cheap.

My wife recently is on a crab eating spree. I am not fan of crabs but I am dragged into these restaurants....HE HE HE!! The other day I had a flyer out into my mail box about this place in Sunway Mentari that offers RM9.90 for Shark Fin soup and RM29.90 for Buddha Jump over the wall. I never tried this Buddha Jump Over the Wall before. I heard stories that it tasted so good the even a monk after trying it will jump over the wall to leave the monestary. That Good AH???? Like that must try since it was also on special offer. Drove to Sunway Mentari with a few friend and the wife. Found the place. We hesitated to enter in the first place as the place did not have any customers. No customers, bad food? Then again I thought looks can be deceiving ( as I learnt recently) so never mind try first time la.

We knew exactly what we wanted. I had the sharks fin soup and the rest had the Buddha Jump over the wall. Here now in this post, I will only speak of this Buddha Jump over the wall. I was surprise that its actually a soup filled with seafood, scollops and abolone. Didn't look that interesting from the onset. I had a sip of the soup. It tasted like Herbal soup! It didn't have this great taste that I would imagine. I just tasted like ordinary herbal soup! I wonder why the Buddha will Jump over the wall for this!!! For me I would jump back into the monestary.

The rest of the food tasted only fair nothing great to shout about. I sure I will not return to this place again if I had a choice. Now this place looks was not deceiving, it was the real thing!

I drive pass this place almost every week when ever I'm in Taipan however never went and ate here before. The place somehow gave me an impression that its does not serve delicious food. Appreance can be deceiving sometimes. Also I also thought that Devil's crab was a Melaka Portuguese thing and I had it once a long time ago and never had a fancy to it. So this time after years of passing by this place I decide to try it with the home ministry. Since there was only two (effectively eating) of us only order three servings. The fried rice with salted fish, greens and chilly crab. The fried rice was a bit salty but I overheat regulars from other table asking for less salt in it. The chilly crab was nice (the gravy I mean). I can keep eating it with my fried rice.
All in all the place was a pleasant surprise for me. I alway thought that it only catered for a specific group of customers but the food turned out ot be pretty decent. Looks can be deceiving.

A friend of mine came down from Singapore the other night and we meet up for some supper. He wanted to try the Hokkien Mee in Jalan 222. So off we when over to Jalan 222 but found the place closed. What do we do? So since Seapark was near by we drove there to look for some food. As it was late at night most of the coffee shops selling Hokkien Mee was almost ready to close. We then drove pass Caltex in Seapark and found this stall still open. So we stopped the car and in we when to order the Hokkien Mee. I not a big fan of Hokkien Mee but I must admit that when the fried lard pieces are added into the nooddles it does very good and it gives that crunchy feeling in the mouth. One of the other thing I seldom do is to add an raw egg on top of it. Well after mixing up the newly fried noodles and the egg, I can hardly taste the egg or if the noodles taste any different. But this place serves an above average Hokkien Mee for my taste but then again coming from a non-fan of Hokkien Mee, it probably counts alot.

I go to this place during only special occasions. Occasions were we in my office feel like celebrating something. Its a special place. This place is actually situated inside the mosque compound and customers or different races and religious believes walks into the mosque compound during lunch for the fantastic meal. This place only sells nasi berani only twice a week (Tuesday and Thursdays) and that also you need to pre order by phone. No walk in customers are allowed to order the berani. Inducing articifial demand by the supplier? This berani sold at this mosque is actually the one similar you get in Dubai or the original one from India (I heard, I not been to India before). Unlike other places in KL or PJ, this place uses long grain rice for the berani and the chicken is actually cook inside the rice. They produce limited amounts on Tuesdays and Thursdays and when I arrive there its normally almost finish.
The special thing about this rice is that unlike other places, this one is spicy but not hot or oily. It relatively easy to eat large amounts of it. The price is also reasonable at RM6 per plate with a big piece of chicken in it. The mee goreng too will be my next order as I was told is pretty good too.

Whilst waiting for the 12th General Election results I thought I update my blog. Last weekend I had a visit to my favourite yong tau foo place in Seapark P.J. I had a liking for the yong tau foo (YTF) broth that they serve the the stuffed with taufu. One thing I found about this place is that the piece of stuffed YTF are generally generous in their proportions. The unique thing about this place is that you can order porridge, curry lo chi fun or fried noodles to go with your YTF. My personally favourite is the curry lo chi fun. When ever I m there I only order the curry lo chi fun to go withmy YTF.
My normal visits are Sunday mornings but this place is quite far from where I stay now so nowadays my visits get less frequent.

The last time I was at this place was more than 10 years ago. It was when Taipan had just open for only a few years. I been passing this place ever since and not been in for meal. Now since I moved closed to USJ I pass this place more often. So today I made it a point to have dinner there. There were only two of us but I order two mains and two sides as I was yearning to try out this place again. When I entered the place I don't remember the place much. They had a limited selection in th menu but the roast chicken was definately a feature there. I had the half roast chicken while the wife had the lamb shank. The chicken was roasted to perfection with a nice crispy skin. The lamb shank was nice and tender too. I would order it the next time I m there. However due to me being a chicken lover, I thought the chicken tasted better than the lamb shank.
Had ordered the nachos with cheese and the escargots too. Tried both of them not too much to my liking but it was at the same time not dissapointing. I be back for the roast chicken the next time.

I not been to this place before and I never knew it existed in Nilai. Had the opportunity to have my first meal there for lunch with some collegues. Order the fish head curry, sizzling tauhu, yam basket and the claypot port with salted fish. The curry fish head was a dissapointment. It was full of bones. My collegues nearly got one bone stuck into his throat. The highlight of the day was the yam basket. I though this was the best order. I didn't fancy the sizzling tauhu that much because of the shrimps in it. I prefer some mince meat instead of shrimps. The salted fish pork was ok but the quantity was too little. The problem with ordering foods that comes with dry chilly is that mort of the content of the dish is filled with dry chilly leave little room with the meat. Maybe I go again to try something else next time.

When ever I think of South Pacific it will alway be lobsters. I guess this is one of my favourite place to go to on special occasions. Since it was CNY the wife and I with a couple of friends decided to 'Low Sang' there. As usual we had toorder the lobster. I suggested that we try a new style of cooking this time and the waiter suggested lobster steamed with Chinese rice wine and herbs. It turned out very well and we enjoyed it very much. Of course I had to order my favorite chilly prawn. I not into prawns very much but I just love this gravy. I only had half a prawn but I finish all the gravy. I can't wait for my next visit for lobster and prawns.

Was actually planning to have the Seapark Yong Tau Fu yesterday but when we reached Seapark we found that the shop was closed for the CNY holidays. So looked around and we saw this place a few shops down and decided to try it. As it was still early for lunch (11 am) there were no customers and the owner of the place was still preparing the food. I was thinking I seldom try Hakka food even though I am Hakka myself so we gave it a try. As there was only the two of us we only order three dishes. One thing about Hakka food its nothing like Cantonese, nothing flashy or spectacular hence it give an impression that its poor mans food. I guess maybe it has something to do with the history of the clan. Anyway list in the menu reminded me of some of the things that my grandma use to cook. I would return next time to try something else.

During one of the Chinese New year holidays, my siblings was craving for cendol. It seems the cendol in Singapore was not fresh. I wonder why? I always thought cendol was just some dough and some colouring. On the way to my parents place via LDP, I always pass by this mobile cendol place at the corner on the left turn into SS23 after the Kelana Jaya LRT station heading to SS2. This cendol stall been here for years. I remembered that it was runned by a husband and wife team but now they have workers running it for them. I think what makes cendol nice is that the right amount of coconut milk mixed into it with brown sugar. This one has the right amount. Not too sweet but creamy enough.

I had an opportunity to go for dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant in Sydney. So happen that the Mrs had a sceduled night stop at SYD. So we were walking around the city to look for some place to eat. Most the of the places were not open during the night. But I did find this place and went because was very hungry had to go in. Looked at the menu to try to order something different from the usual stuff that I can get from K.L. but everything seem to look the same. Rice noodles, beef noodles and all. What more I was looking at others around me to see if there anything I fancy but all looked like something out from a Hong Kong movie. So decided to have the usual. Barbequed chicken with vermicelli for me and beef noodles for the Mrs.

Recently last month, I had to a kangaroo trip in for some business trip in Australia. Kangaroo, I mean literately a hopping trip in Australia. I had to cover 5 Australian cities in 5 days. I had the shortest time available for me to complete my task. I planned the trip which started from Brisbane also took me to Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. Boy was it tiring but I was a sort of a challenge as I not done it before. I spend lonely nights at hotels and many more lonely hours in the airports. Checking into hotels late and checking out early in the morning to go to work. However I manage to squeeze in some time to look for some good food.

At times I spend so little time in the hotel room that I hardly made a mess of the room when I checked out.

The bed is the only mess I made during all my stay. The problem of checking in late into the hotels was that getting decent food as at times very difficult in Australia. Most of the time I normally end up having McDonalds or going to some Kebab shop around the corner of the hotel. This is what I call eating on the run. However there was some great food moments especially in Melbourne and Sydney. Maybe because these two cities had shops that open longer hours as compared to the others.

However, I did find some time in Melbourne to visit an Gelati Shop which was open till late night (surprisingly for Australian standards). One of my old colleague took me there. It was right in the city of Melbourne and this place is seems is very popular. The numerous customers forming the line at such late night proves it so.

I was told that the popular gelati was the durian flavour and the shop brings in the durian from Darwin a few times a week. Its so popular that the Durian flavoured Gelati had to be limited to only a maximum of 1 scoops per customer (who says Mat Salleh don't eat durian).

Since I love durian so much I had to try. I must say the it was the best gelati I had. Then again, I not eaten that many gelatis in my life. It was so good that I was tempted to go for another helping but they runned out shortly after that. Its not like any regular ice cream as its smooth and does not have any ice flakes in it. I know where to go when I am in Melbourne the next time.

When its raining one of my favourite gastronomic affairs would be the BKT. There is this place row of shop at SS14 where there are numerous BKT shops. This place is my regular. Other seems to think so too as the customers are many and sometime during peak hours its difficult to find a place to sit. My normal order would always be the pork stomach white peppered soup. It strong and pungent and not many people likes it. I am the one who love spicy food so this is the next best thing to curry for me.....

It been about a year since I came to this place for lunch. I remember that the last time I was here was during last year's chinese new year lunch for the office. This place does not seem to change over the year as people working near Subang Airport would frequent here for lunch or dinner. The food quality had alway stayed the consistently good. I wonder if the chef was the same all this years? Last week I was in Subang for some work and ended up at this place for lunch with some of the office friends. Ordered the normal stuff but one in particular I never tried here is he sweet and sour long pork ribs. I beats any up market rib restaurants anyday. The ginger fish was the other favourite.
There no surprises why this place can stay popular with the office staff in Subang Airport all this while. The place is so well hidden in Kampung Subang but its alway crowded with customers whenever I go there. This is what I cann quality sells.

Wishing Happy New Year to all!!!! As this is the first blog of the year, I would like to keep it simple and may it be more properous to all. It was a quiet new year's eve for me as staying at home watching the festivities on TV. Maybe I getting older but not into the crowds an noise anymore. Due to long holiday for Hari Raya Haji and Christmas, I had a free morning to get up early and go for breakfast. Its indeed a rare occasion that I am to do this. However wasn't feeling too well after all the Christmas feasting so decided to have some porridge. The place I love about "Chee Chap Chuk" in USJ is at USJ 14. Not because the porridge is nice but the additionals that are good. The fried intestines are crunchy and tasty. There was a man selling "yao char kuai" next to the place so bought some to go with the porridge. Sure nice way to start the morning with something good. Indeed when you are working, there is seldom time for this as I am alway lacking of sleep and the temptation to stay in bed is greater that having early morning brealfast.

Was around Taipan and was thinking where to have dinner. Then we thought of our friend's place there. So we though we give it a try since we not been there before. The decor and ambience from outside was nice. Inside was spacious and plenty of room between tables. As for the food, for the price we paid, reasonable. Comes with friendly staff and owner to serve you too.

Last Friday was around Bandar Puteri for some family related errants. As I was close by this place again, we decided to go there again. This time we ordered the nasi lemak and seafood sandwich. I must say, their own baked bread is very good. It soft and thick even after toasting it. I definately a convert to this place. I highly recommende any sandwich or bread form this place. However on Friday there is a special menu that is Adrian's Chicken Rice. I not tried it yet, maybe my next visit.

I went to this place ages ago but never got around posting it. It was in Puchong on the opposite side of the LDP of IOI mall. We were there almost near lunch time but it was still quite busy. One of those many people theory that my wife and I use to discover a new place to eat. The place was a typical dim sum shop, nothing exclusive or classy about it. Just good old small portions at reasonable prices. Nothing really special but also not awful tasting. No lasting memories here.

Was deciding on where to have breakfast on this public holiday and we took a drive to Bandar Puteri. Drive pass Old town kopitiam and decided to have breakfast there but this place was just next door and it had more customers than Old Town so went it an try. As we entered we found out that the proprieter was a former MAS cabin crew that had open this place. My wife had flown with him a few time. He even had a collection of coke cans he bought from all his night stops at different stations.
Anyway back to the food. The most impressive thing about this place was the bread. Thier bread was of a different texture and softness. Later I found out that the owner has a special recipe that he gives the baker to bake with the softness and thickness that he wants. The food was above average and most of all we had a discount....airline staff la..

There not many good places to eat at around KLIA and if you find one it will try out to be a gem. There this place at near (mor than 10 Km that is) KLIA that serves the most tasty nasi kandar outside of Penang. This place is so packed during lunch that you need to queue for your food if you come late. The best is that you come in a group and order for all and they will serve it straight to your table. The have beef and chicken as the main menu. You can order the half or quarter chicken for an individual meals with a sinful helping of white rice. My personal favourite is the fried chicken and the beef gravy. They normally serve the gravy mix but I prefer to have another plate of beef gravy seperately. They have the best beef gravy I ever tasted. Its definately worth the 10 km drive for lunch there.

When ever I pass by USJ 14 in the evenings or late at night, there is this shop facing the main road that is always crowded with customers. I had to stop by and have a look at what was so popular there. I had frequent Restaurant Meisek during the mornings but never at night. I found out that they were selling white chicken and all the customers are only eating that. Even the 'Tai Chao' in the same place had too close down because this stall was so popular that they took all the customers.
So off I went with the wife and order half a chicken and some 'kuey toew' soup. Being a chicken man myself I must say the chicken had nice tasty smooth skin and the meat was tender. I always wondered why the chicken is not hot. But there may be an explaination to it.
I heard once from my sister that after steaming the chicken they put the chicken into ice water so that the skin becomes smooth and tender. Thats why they alway serve white chicken at room temperature.
Anyway this place is so popular that by the time we were there around 8 pm, most of the chicken had been sold out and more was being prepared. As always when the place becomes popular, the boss also becomes arrogant. She does have time to wait and take orders. I guess it maybe the last time I go there.

Taipei Food Part 7 - Bubble Tea.

This is the last installment of the short trip to Taipei. You can't go to Taipei without trying out at least the bubble tea. The variety is so wide that its difficult for one to choose if you in a bubble tea shop. Anyway for those who had not tried it, I recommend it. Its highly chewy and refreshing for one and I like the way they put the plastic pack on the top of the cup for you.
Prior ro leaving Taipei I had my fair share of tea... I am looking forward for my next trip...

More photos on Keelung night market. There were a few unual things I saw. Firstly the almond tea, I've never heard of it before. I was walking past this stall and there was a distingtive foul aroma and I thought it was the "chao tau fu" but it turned out to be the grounded almond nuts. I smelt horrible but after a few sniffs I somehow got use to it. I had a little but of it (almond nuts) to drink and it tasted a bit like soya milk. It seems it good for help (isn't everything everyone claims these days). Another usual scene was a chapati man. People from the sub-continent are a rare sight in Taiwan. What was more surprising is that them doing business in the night market speaking mandarin. I guess when you need to survive you learn anything.

Taipei Food Part 5 - Keelung night market.

This place is the biggest outdoor food outlet I seen (well except of course other than Thailand). Keelung is a port city near Taipei. It use to be a trading point for goods coming into Taiwan and this town seem to be as big as K.L. The night market which includes a hawker street has loads of variety of seafood.
I was first taken to have a soup that had some flour in it. It looked a bit like the pan mee here only the flour is more thinner and fine. The soup is a bit bland but the judging from the crowd at this stall it seem to be pretty popular.
The other good one was the fried chicken that come in small pieces (yuan se chi). This place is must visit when you are in Taipei for food.

Taipei Food Part 4 - Jin Shan.

About 45 minutes north of Taipei, there is a little town by the name of Jin Shan. We were there for some sight seeing and we ended up at a food stall in town just in the temple compound that sold thier famous steam duck fro lunch. The place was a bit odd for me as it was just in front of the temple and one place just sold duck and stirred fried dishes while on the opposite side it sold noodles.
I noticed that there were not many seating place between the two stalls and people just picked up thier food as cooking and take it somewhere else to eat with the plates. Business was so good that the owner of the duck stall didn't have to take any orders, she just cooked a batch of vegetables or crab or whatever and placed it at the counter and customers will just take what they wanted and go. And mind you business was so brisk that it doesn't go to waste, it finishes there and then. We were a bit late in the evening and there are still people taking the food, I can't imagine the scene during lunch or dinner time.
As for the food, the duck was ok and tender. It does not have the bad aroma that ducks meat produces if not cooked properly. The noodles was nice and smooth too. It doesn't have the after taste of preservatives like the noodles we get elsewhere. As for the rest it was ok. But the experience of seeing something new as in the way the stall was set up and food ordered was something new for me.

Taipei Food Part 3 - Breakfast.

During one of the mornings we decided to have breakfast Taiwanese style. Walked to one of the small shops near the hotel that sold a typical Taiwanese fare. It was a fare walk from the hotel but I wanted to try the "you tiao" i.e. the "yao char kuai". A typical breakfast may consist of soya milk (sweet or salted) with "you tiao" or "siow loong pao". Anyway since I rarely had the change I ordered all including the "vor tiak" or pancake and a plain "man tao". The "siow loong pao" and the pancake was the best. I made it a point to have it on this trip as from my last trip I had it and I know it was good.
The soya milk was of different texture than the once we get over here. It taste better and I dip the "you tiao" into it. The "you tiao" also is long and cruncy unlike the onces we get here that are hard and short (I think in Malaysia we "tao kung kam liew" on this).
One thing I notice about Taiwanese everyday food, they give you large enough portion only for you to feel just right, not too much or too little.

Here some photos of the Tam Sui night market and some of the food stalls I took. Its not as famous as the Shilling or Rao Er night market in Taipei but its just as big. Competition in Taiwan must be pretty stiff as everyone is doing thier own thing to attract customers to thier products. Load hailers, speakers and auction sales are a common sight here even for selling food. I came a cross two girls selling seafood sausages using load speakers. There were not many takers except us. I was pretty good. There so many food here that I can't recognise the end product I just ended up taking photos of it but I did not try it. The sign boards are all in Mandarin.

Taipei Food Part 1.

Was in Taipei for a few days last week. This was my second trip there. From my previous experience, the Taipei street food the a must for tourist to try. There so many variaties and variations of food that one is spoilt for choices. One of the best places to have street food is at thier night markets. The size of the popular Taiwanese night markets are not like ours, its many tim bigger and the range of goods sold there are wide that it puts our pasar malam to shame.
As I made contact with the some friends in Taipei prior going, I had transport that took me to many place. The Taiwanese are known for thier exception friendlyness and hospitality to foreigners.
I made a trip to the Tamsui night market located at the about 40 minutes from Taipei. I was told that one of the speciality there is the so called "Tek Taan" or Iron Egg. I was so curious that I bought one for myself. Its tasted like our version of the "york choy taan" but only harder. It sold individually or vacuum packed to be sold. I was told that you can't get it anywhere else in the night markets in Taipei only in the nigh market in Tamsui. Intersting...

I saw a review in the newspaper about this place that served great cheese crabs and it said it had a branch in Puchong. So off I went to look for it. When I found it I only realise that I actually eaten or rather 'Tah Pau' at this place before. I had some bad comments the last time but since we were there I decided to give it a try by have a sit in meal.
Thay had the RM1 shark fin promotion. We ordered that home made tauhu, curry prawn in coconut and of course salt egg yoke crab. I particularly liked the curry prawns. This time round the food was much better. Maybe this sort of food cannot 'tah pau' as it will not be as good as having it straight from the wok. Anyway good night of makan.

Have not been to this place for more than a year. The last time was when I had a freind over from Kota Kinabalu and We made a trip there. The place has not changed much since the last visit. The Fried Yong Tau FU is still as fresh and crispy as it was made fresh from the raw ingredience. It cost RM1 per piece. The crowd seem tobe fewer on that day maybe because there was another Yong Tau Fu shop opened just a few houses away taking some of the customers. Nice and lights dinner if you don't prefer the heavy stuff.

I had not been to Megamall for ages so lat wednesday I decide to make trip there for lunch. The problem this mall is that there so many outlets, we are spoilt for choices. There pertaining question, What to eat? As I not too familiar with the place we decide to walk around with our empty stomachs to shop around. Finally we ended up at the Garden area and out hungry stomachs said no more. You must eat now!!! So we were at this outlet that had many customers. Our usual wisdom says many customers must mean good food. So we hoped in.
This place generally serve Hong Kong styled noodles and rice with a local twist. From the menu the servings looked good and huge. I decided to go for the beef noodles and the misses when for the chicken steak rice. I order the "soi kow" or water dog to be shared. To my dissapointment went the food came it was no where the size of portioned that the advertised in there menu. It was some what minicule. We asked the chief waitress about this, she just uttered the photo angle in the menu made it food look big. Oh well!!! If only i had the time to go to small claims court.
Anyway, the consolation was that the food tasted great!!! I especially loved the chicken. It was crispy and had some mild curry flavour in it. I also order the "black jelly with white coffee" it was good too. I never had my coffee this way before. It tasted a bit like black jelly with soya milk but less creamy. I would love to recommend this place. Maybe next time I try some other thing and the portions will be bigger.

Pizza Uno, Bandar Puteri Puchong.

The wife wanted western for dinner. We where deciding where to go and finally ended up at this place in Bandar Puteri. I use to frequent the one in Taipan, USJ, but this one I only been onces some months back. Somehow this place is more meant for fine dining and its more cozy but I somehow like the one at Taipan better which is more loud and cramp which gives a typical economical Italian eatery place.

We wanted pizza for dinner but we were told that the pizza maker was on emergency leave and we can order everything else in the menu except that. What happen? I guess the cook left for a better paying job.

Ordered sangria for my drink. Sangria is a cocktail of red wine, lemonade and fruit juice. It very nice and refreshing. The fried calamari salad was much better than the spaghetti. Lots of olive oil and greens. Not as filling but sufficient for the night.

After her trip to South Africa, the wife will always have this craving for Nando's Chicken. I wonder why? I had it a few time. I would what the big deal was? Anayway had to venture out to Subang Parade for it. Surprisingly they had some new offerings since the last time I was there. They have beef now in thier menu. We ordered the half chicken with mild flavour and the mild plafour beef sandwich. The beef was a dissapointment as it was tough and hard to chew. As always the chicken pretty filling, thats about all I can say.

After the meal I had with Alf the other day at South Pacific without my wife, I had to take her there again one week later. But this time we went before 7pm trying to get the 30% discount for the seafood. Ordered the fish, crabs and my favourite at this place curry prawns. As usual, the food was fantastic. It never seem to amaze me how they can get the consistancy of the food so well. This time the curry prawns were cooked to prefection the way I like it. All in all the bill was less than RM90. Good deal I would think.

Had not been blogging for a few weeks. This is because I hadn't had the time to go places and when I did, I didn't have the time to post it. Was busy at work and at home. This is one of my archived places I been to. It was breakfact at Carrefour. With the Balinese craze going about, I guess everyone is jumping into the Balinese concept of eatery outlets. I never knew authentic Balinese breakfast had toasted bread and half boiled eggs like the we do. Or do they?
Anyway had the curry chicken nasi lemak, half boiled egg and toast. Pretty normaly stuff but not bad either. Then again food at hypermarkets were never great in the first place.

I use to frequent this place so often in the late 90s and early 2000s. I always found the taste of food here very consistant each time I order it. I don't go here that often now since I moved away from my parents house but then again this year I dined here about 4 times already. Most of the time with my friend from Australia whom enjoys the food at this place very much. They seem to have the cheapest lobsters in town. Each time we come we have at least 10 bottles of beer and the lobster or crab among other things. Our orders here are very much standard and I get to order depending of the company I come with. Last night was the lobster.
With the consistancy in taste, I suspect either the chef has stayed the same all this years or there is a standard measurement of ingredience they put in so they can change the chef but the taste remains the same.
This place gets popular after 11pm as there is the discount on seafood. They call it 7/11 as in 30% of if you order before 7pm and after 11pm. The place get really crowded after 11pm. This place is one of the most multicultural patroned chinese restaurant I seen. All sortf of customers go there. If there is a fair mix of customer, it must be good. I can't wait for my next trip.

Had a family get together dinner for the wife's birthday yesterday. As we always pass this place to go to BB Thai, we notice this place is alway crowded. We had not set foot into this place before we decide to try it. As it just next to door to BB Thai why not. Since it was crowded, we thought it must be good. As usual, when we arrived there and it was crowded. The space is much smaller than BB Thai the dining area also was narrow.
Ordered the normal fare of chinese dishes, the crab, tauhu and chicken was a disappiontment. But the steam la la was execellent. The soupy gravy tasted so good that we finished it to the last drop. Maybe because of the volume of customers there that the quality of food may not be so good that night.
Another point was that the bill came to RM179 for all the ordered food that led me to think that the price at this place was some what reasonable hence the crowd. I stick to BB Thai anytime. This place is just opposite the old Subang airport terminal 3.

Coconut Flower, Klang.

Had a friend back from Dubai for a month holiday and we decided to take a drive to Teluk Gong for some sea food. I always heard of a place where you can get toddy with seafood in Klang. SInce I had never tried toddy in my lfe before off we went to this place in Klang for dinner. For those who don't know what is toddy, it a coconut juice extracted from the flower of the coconut and left to ferment. Normally its harvest from the coconut tree in the morning and left by itself and it will self ferment without any yeast. It seems it is nice and sweet if immediately drunk straight after extracting it from the tree.
So we ordered a small bottle to try. My friend insisted on ordering a bottle of guiness stout to mix with the today. And since we were having dinner, I was against the idea of mixing the two concoctions. A poured a little bit into the glass and had a sip. This is how it taste like in sequence and I kid you not, the initial sip tasted sweet like coconut water, slowly when it goes down the throat it tasted sour and as it goes all the way down the throat it leaves a bad tasting burnt taste. For me it was the bad burnt after taste that I could take. I had to mix the toddy with guiness. I wonder how people can drink toddy neat. I didn't get high or anything like that, maybe because the toddy was kept in the fridge cold and that slowed down the fermentation process. I don;t mind having more next time.
As for the food, nothing really great. All above average. My favourite was the chilly squid or sotong. That was memorable. the rest was just ordinary tasting. I recommend that. Next comes the fried egg with oyster. The rest I think I can get better quality in P.J or K.L. It must be the location and atmosphere that bring people all the way to Klang for seafood.
Surprising for a weekday, there were lots of customers there. The restaurant is large. I think its situated in at least an acre land area with a wooden house (must be the owner of the restaurant) in the entrance. There are numerous restaurant in the surrounding area selling seafood but this place has the most people. I be back for the toddy next time.

Time for bak kut teh again. Instead of going to the usual place in Klang for the dry BKT, we decide on another place in Bukit Raja. As the saying goes, all places selling BKT in Klang is nice. We were there late morning and this place was jammed packed with customers. I've not been to this place for sometime but it seems to be as popular as before. Ordered the BKT portion for two with some vegetables. I wanted lean meat and intestines. A typical BKT fare. It soup was a bit salty. My wife and I had the same opinion after the meal where both of us had a dry throat after eating it. Maybe there was too much ajinomoto in it? I had a look at the kitchen and saw so many home made BKT herbs in home made packets. Wow! Must be some secret recipe. Overall it was nice and maybe return in the future.

Decided to go to BB Thai opposite the old Subang airport terminal 3 for dinner. I go there with the office folks quite often but my mum not been there before. So made a trip there with the family. The wife wanted the crab for dinner so this place serves pretty decent seafood. We ordered the asam fish, stir fried lotus, mantis prawns and the salted egg yoke crab. Everything was great. My personal favourite was the mantis prawn and the salted egg yoke crab. Not being a big crab fan myself but I was pleasantly surprise that how they can coat the shell of the crab with salted egg york and fry it. I tasted fantastic. The food was above average and thats why my and my office pals always go there over and over again.

Rootian Kuah Town Langkawi.

Had a trip to Langkawi for three days last week to visit the in-laws. The last time I was there we went to this place in Kuah where they had served fanstastic stewed pork trotters. After two years we made another trip there again. Surprisingly this place had not changed much even though Kuah town had expanded a bit since I was there last time. We ordereed the rooste duck, curry fish, tauhu and of course the stewed port trotters. The curry fish and the pork trotter were my favourites. There was not much fat in it, just enough so you can picked it out. I think so far this is the best chinese place to eat in Kuah town during for dinner. Definately will be here again on my next trip to Langkawi.
